Reiki was rediscovered in Japan at the beginning of the last Century by Mikao Usui, but the system of healing and symbols used are likely to be much older, and can be found in Buddhist libraries.

The simplicity of Reiki was emphasised by Usui, indeed anybody can be attuned to the energy and taught the symbols and hand positions used.

 

Reiki has latterly become associated with the New Age movement, and spread throughout the West, however, in it's original form, Reiki has no affiliation with any religion or other belief system at all.  Having said this, for me, to give a treatment is to have a brush with the Divine.

 

Those being treated remain fully clothed, and either lie or sit under a blanket (for warmth).  The practitioner places her hands in a series of positions to allow the recipient to draw the energy through the hands to the areas in most need.  It usually takes about an hour, and most people fall asleep at some point.

 

Our physical body, along with our energetic body, holds the memory of our lives, of our thoughts and feelings.  Our mind is not separate from our body, or our soul.  Whoever said that they are separate?  This is the meaning of the term 'holistic'.  

 

Today, Reiki is used in America at the Harvard Medical Training school, and as a complementary support in some UK hospitals.  In Germany, Reiki treatments are reimbursed by some health insurers.
